University of Washington freshman Spencer Hawes will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday to remove a loose particle in his right knee, men’s basketball coach Lorenzo Romar announced today.
The 7-foot center and former Seattle Prep star is projected to be sidelined for two to four weeks, but a true timeline for his return won’t be available until the day after the surgery at the earliest.
“This is obviously a setback for Spencer and our program,” Romar said. “But, we are very optimistic based on what we have been told that he shouldn’t be out for very long. It also helps that he was already in great condition.”
Romar served as the head coach of the United States’ team during last summer’s FIBA Americas under-18 Championships. Hawes was a member of that team that won the gold medal in San Antonio, Texas.
“We spent time together in July with the USA team to where he learned a lot of the things we’ll be going over during preseason practice,” Romar said. “So, he’s already somewhat familiar with our system. We don’t anticipate him being too far behind.”
